The Actifry Family Size™ is a larger version of the Actifry™ Classic.
It handles 1.5 kg (3.3 pounds) of chips / fries at a time, compared to 1 kg (2.2 pounds) for the Actifry Classic.
Available in black or white, it is sold in Europe, the UK, Australia and North America.
Like the Actifry Classic, it uses 1400 W of power.
It really doesn’t take up much more counter space than the Actifry Classic does.
This machine is an upgrade from the Actifry Classic in that:
- it has a 50% larger capacity;
- it comes with a removable, grey collar for the pan that stops food from tumbling out;
- the timer controls the machine, starting and stopping it automatically.
The timer on this Actifry model can survive the machine being unplugged for 2 or 3 minutes, and it will remember where it was at and pick right back up again. It is also one of the loudest timers when it goes off of all the Actifry models. The machine will start immediately after you finish selecting the cooking time; there is no need to press another button.
In fact, so far, I personally have found the dial / timer / control buttons the simplest, best, most efficient and most friendly of all the Actifry models I’ve tried to date (the 2 in 1 interface seemed like a downgrade to me owing to its complexity and faint-sounding timer.)
The handle also has one of the “nicest” grips in the Actifry line.
There is just one button to open the lid, to the right of the handle (many other models have, confusingly for many people, 2 buttons to open the lid.)
Here are step-by-step directions on how to remove the Actifry Family size paddle.
The Family Size pan has a splash guard collar (aka spill ring.) Here are step-by-step directions on how to remove and replace it for cleaning.
Curiously, T-Fal recommends that you remove the pan’s collar when you are making a liquidy recipe (I never have, and in fact, value it most for those recipes such as risotto so that they don’t slosh over.) “Your appliance is fitted with a turn-over ring. This ring is designed particularly for cooking chips but we also recommend you use it when making recipes with the maximum quantity of food. It must be removed for recipes using liquid.” [1]Actifry Family Manual, UK Edition, p. 6
The Family Size model comes with what many consider to date (August 2014) to be the best recipe book yet issued with an Actifry. Friends who have upgraded to the 2-in-1 model, and passed the Actifry Family machine to other friends, have given those friends photocopies of the Family recipe book and kept the original for themselves.
Model numbers are in the AH900xxx range in Europe; AW950xxx in North America.
More information is available on the Tefal UK web site or the Canadian web site (links valid as of January 2016.)
To be clear, the Actifry Snacking Basket accessory CANNOT be used with this machine.
If you do any kind of entertaining ever, or routinely cook for more than two people, if your budget stretches to this model as compared to the Actifry Classic model, then you won’t regret having the added capacity of this machine.
If, however, being able to do coated / battered foods is an absolute must for you, and a deal-breaker otherwise, then you need to either look at the smaller Actifry Classic model with an added Actifry Snacking Basket accessory but smaller 1 kg pan capacity, OR, at the Actifry 2 in 1, with the same 1.5 kg capacity pan as this machine.

I bought my first Actifry Classic(Original) for $5, I now own 5 because hey, $5 is a good deal. I just bought my first Actifry Family and I’m pretty happy with it but it has a larger volume cooking area so it takes longer to cook. The snacking basket is a must have for the original but for the family model I saw a swirly non stick upper basket in a Youtube video yet I have never found another reference to it. Cooking from raw is not a good idea for this, just pre cooked frozen food. The Ninja dual basket is good for cooking from raw.
